Malia Haili Morioka
8/1-11/1 Kitchen, Communal Room
Malia Haili Morioka is a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) artist working primarily in ceramics. Her work explores the relationship between Kanaka Maoli identity, ʻāina (land), and the ongoing impacts of settler colonialism. She sees her sculptures as a dialogue between past and present, where traditional forms, symbols, and narratives are reimagined through a contemporary lens. Each piece functions as both an homage to kūpuna (ancestors) and an assertion of Indigenous presence, challenging colonial narratives while uplifting Indigenous ways of knowing and being. Her work has been exhibited at AM:PM Gallery and the Earthlings Indigenous Showcase at Caelum Gallery in NYC.
